Kutner's Dead House MD Season 5 Episode 20 Recap

Simple Explanations

Watch and download this episode of House MD

In a shocking episode, Dr. Lawrence Kutner, played by actor Kal Penn is dead. Dr. House was curious why he did not show up to work, and sent Foreman and Thirteen (aka Dr. Hadley) to investigate. When they enter his apartment, they find him laying in a pool of blood. Suicide by self inflicted gunshot wound.

House takes this on as his main focal point of trying to solve the mystery of why Kutner would kill himself. There is a couple, an older man and woman. The man, played by Meatloaf, is having heart problems, and the woman fakes illness to be close with her husband.

As the episode unfolds, it turns out that the woman really does have something wrong with her, and She is bent on attempting to save her husband. The plot continues to revolve around the issue of suicide, from the woman trying to kill herself to save her husband and donate her heart, to her husband demanding to donate his kidney to save his wife, and of course, Kutner's suicide, which House simply cannot wrap his mind around.

House continues to focus more on solving the mystery of why Kutner would kill himself than on the mystery of what is wrong with the now mysteriously ill woman. House persuades Cameron to talk to Meatloaf and have him agree to donate his kidney to his dying wife. He will die on the table, but he only has a few days to live. He agrees, but then Cameron tells House that there are nodules on Meatloaf's fingers, and he may have a curable disease.

She's correct, and House tells him that he has a fungal infection and he's completely curable. He tells house that they'll be scraping up his remains to give a kidney to his wife. His plans are foiled when Taub tells the woman that her husband has a curable disease, but he wants to donate his kidney, if that's okay with her.

Meanwhile, House has decided that there is no plausible reason for Kutner to commit suicide, so it must have been murder. Now he is investigating the "murder" of Lawrence Kutner. Wilson is appalled, and tells House that all he cares about is the mystery of it all. He is not there because he cares about Kutner. He only cares to solve the puzzle. He says that's all it is to House, is a mystery to be solved. That's all anything ever is.

The woman is getting worse, and it finally occurs to House that if she is sick, and they can't figure out what is wrong, then all the clues must not be there. Everybody lies, so she lied about something. He bursts in and asks why she would think the beaches of Rio are the same as the beaches of Hawaii. It turns out, she was bitten by some sort of fly. She comes clean and tells her husband that she just got tired of waiting for him to come so they can have their dream vacation in Rio, and she went with someone else.

It's too late, however. She was not diagnosed in time.

House continues looking through Kutners apartment, while everyone else attends the funeral. Taub, staying behind at the hospital, finally breaks down and cries.

At the end, Fox asks viewers to go to fox.com/kutner. At the new mockup site, there is a tribute to Dr. Kutner. This makes it seem as if Kal Penn, the actor, is perhaps not living anymore, but at this point I have seen no evidence of such. Please do let me know if this is incorrect.

At the fox.com/kutner site, there is also an obituary. Here's an excerpt.

Mercer County Courier
April 7, 2009

Dr. Lawrence Kutner died on Thursday, April 2nd from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 33 years old.

"Dr. Kutner was a hard working, young doctor with a kind, unassuming, gentle manner. He will be missed by all of us", said Dr. Lisa Cuddy, Dean of Medicine at Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital, where Dr. Kutner worked.

Dr. Kutner was born in Freemont, California. Tragedy marred his early life as he lost his parents, Karamchand and Niki Baidwan, who were shot during an armed robbery. After a couple of years in foster care, Julia and Richard Kutner adopted Lawrence. He showed great promise in high school, winning a Westinghouse Science award for an experiment involving dark matter. His adoptive parents mused that he showed a freethinking, inventive streak from a young age.

Viewers are asked to leave their message for Dr. Kutner. It looks to me like this is an attempt at viral marketing. However, I'm not sure, in spite of the shocking nature of Kutner's demise, that he is an important enough character on the show to really go viral with this. It sort of reminds me of the question on the Simpsons about what important characters have died. Although several characters had died throughout the show, the correct answer was that no important characters had ever died.

The woman who is dying actually needed her husband's liver. They were going to "take part of it out" so that he would die on the table and then the whole thing would go to his wife.

Anonymous said...

I am SO upset. Kutner was an excellent character. funny, smart, good looking. It's too bad we lost that character. It should have been 13.

Anonymous said...

it does not make sense. What were the directors thinking? Kutner was interesting. This show sucks. Just when it is getting interesting they make idiots change.

Anonymous said...

How ironic that Kutner isnt in the picture at the bottom of the screen. :-(

MJ said...

Well, the show does have a history of making gigantic changes. What about when The whole team changed, and Kutner, Taub and Thirteen were brought on board? Many fans of the show were furious about that change. I guess now they have integrated into the show enough, but that is what the writers do. They throw a wrench into the system.

I'm so disappointed with the removal of dr kutner. I loved his character! Especially when kutner pissed on house's chair. Why do the producers get rid of the great character. What were they thinking. Please tell me this is just a dream!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Why did they kill of Kumar? Take the black guy or the white guy but not Kumar. I guess he's in weed heaven smoking all of that marjurana. Harold must be taking this all very hard.

Anonymous said...

That would be because that was the original cast prior to 13, Taub and Kutner.

You are correct. I have fixed the error. Thanks.

The show has been getting crappy anyway. Getting rid of Kal Penn, (my favorite Montclair, NJ native), is just what I needed to stop watching the series. The only breath of fresh air in all of the old and irritatingly dull dialogue is gone. Good luck 'HOUSE'!! You'll need it.

This is such BULL I'm so angry right now. I'm sure I'll get over it but come on SUICIDE!? You know what would have been really intresting if he got run over by a car or something and they had to treat the guy who killed him, then at least I could have felt better about the character death. Suicide it just tooo random and HORRIBLE. I hate this.

tacy2chris said...

i think fox made a terrible mistake of killing kutner off this series, he was an asset to the group and made the show more exciting.

Dr House said...

Especially when kutner pissed on house's chair.

Oh sure. It's funny now.

Anonymous said...

Was this reduction in staff an economic decision? It certainly couldn't be that Dr. Kutner had outlived his usefulness! Hopefully he'll find a better place in Writers' Heaven.

Dr House said...

This episode seems to have really touched a nerve. I think one of the things about it is that it is as senseless and incomprehensible as the real thing. You want answers, but there simply aren't any. From an artistic perspective, I think they really got it right.

That's how suicide is folks. You don't want it to be so. You can't understand why. You wish with all your might that it's not real, and yet it is, and you need to deal with the fact. It is what it is.

A friend of mine and I were wondering if there was gonna be anything that would come to shock and energize the show, especially after the 2-part finale of season 4 (which is just about the best episodes of any series, bar none, and is quite hard to top...)

Now... I think we know! Did it shock? Yes! Did it energize the show? We'll see... Did it top the season 4 finale? Hummm...

But the biggest question: WHY? Was he fired? Did he quit(better gig elsewhere)? Is he sick? 'Cause if he were dead, the WORLD would have known WAY BEFORE the episode aired - heck, John Spencer died 4 months before "Leo McGarry" died, so...

Anonymous said...

Why did you get rid of Kutner? I"d liked him. He was very interesting. How will the show survive without him.

Anonymous said...

why kill off Kutner, he was the only new character with promise? He was funny, smart, had potential for many different story lines. Get rid of 13 if they needed to get rid of someone.

Anonymous said...

I serioulsy can't believe they killed off Kutner - and in such a dramaticly sad (and not interesting) way. What the hell - he was the best (and only comedic relief) in the show -- the other 3 are so sad and boring -why not get rid of one of them!

In response to Dr. House saying the show hit a nerve and the show did it right - um WRONG. If you noticed people are more pissed about the character change than the death. Everyone is saying it was the wrong character and the show is not nearly as good without him. He could have gotten murdered whatever - you would still see the same outrage at the loss of the best character on the show.

Now all they have to do is let 13 die of her disease and they can bring back Cameron and Chase...

as agitated as people are about this Dr. being killed off on the show, I think you guys better bring him back to life again!

I dont get it...I just went back and watched last weeks episode and the previews had Kutner in it, and house was on the elevator with blurry vision, so I dont entirely understand I think that it may indeed be one of Houses dreams I am very much anticipating next weeks episode. :)

Anonymous said...

what is the matter with you people house is all about explaining the unexplainable there will certainly be a answer that will come in future shows this will not be something forgotten and if you watch the preveiws chase will not be the first one to come back a hosiptal slut will be coming back into the group

Dr House said...

Everyone is saying it was the wrong character and the show is not nearly as good without him.

Exactly my point about how it is just like suicide in real life. It is always the wrong way, and the wrong person. It always leaves those who are behind with anger. You are perfectly demonstrating the point being made.

Anonymous said...

i think it is another one of House's dreams. There has been nothing on any shows about Kutner leaving and I watched the last two weeks before this one. The writers of House always have something up their sleeve. Just like House. I will be watching next week. Also I believe the site is just for a ratings poll.

Unknown said...

Well House has jumped the shark and I am now officially done with the show. It can only get worse from here on out. Just like Lost did....and so many shows before it. At least Life on Mars jumped the shark on the last episode.

Anonymous said...

Didn't the show said he was 28, not 33? Also, he was allegedly born in 1975.

Unknown said...

Does anyone think that maybe Kal's contract was up? Do we know just how long he was supposed to be on the show? I really like this season, but I already thought the regular cast was pretty large.

Anonymous said...

kutner sucked. he wasn't that interesting at all. I wish they would kill off taub too. I want to original 3 back. The first three seasons were the best. Anyone who says otherwise only started watching last season.

Starvart said...

It was a very tragic episode, very well carried through shock factor. Didn't see that coming at all. Actually, I didn't think they'd let him die since the episodes have kind of been like, "Hey something dramatic!! Actually, nevermind, let's drop it" and an issue only lasts an opisode. eg. Cuddy's inability to feel anything for her baby, House on methadone, House going to a psychiatrist. I don't mind that Kutner's gone, .. he wasn't a favourite character of mine. Can't say any of the "new" team are. And Kutner peeing on House's chair was poorly presented. Cat pee smells WAAAAAY different than human pee.

Anonymous said...

Completely senseless storyline and disturbing that it is not clear whether or not the actor himself has died. Very wrong! I will not watch the show anymore.

Mamie said...

I am totally bummed that Kutner is gone. House could have had the same impact if it was Spencer or his muse. They are hardly in it. But Kutner, he was soooo good. I am unhappy with the show.

Kal Penn isn't dead. He's alive and well and shooting a movie. ^^

Killing Dr. Kutner was horrendous! However think guys, we don’t know whatz in the writers mind...So far we trusted his skills and we all liked it. So lets continue our trust in the writer...

Kutner was really creative, spontaneous and funny. Let me take out the writers role for the next few minutes and paint the canvas with my imagination.

How about House killing Kutner being jealous of his abilities? He was the only one who stands against him with courage, smart like house to come up with out of box thinking...Is it possible?

That's what I thought, sue to the lack of information on him being dead in real life. Thanks.

I am saddened that Kutner has been written off. The point being made about suicide is on point. It's never fair, it never makes sense. It is, however a reality and very painful for those left behind. I'm in agreement with some of the other writers in wishing that the powers that be can find a way to bring him back. He was one of the more interesting characters.

Anonymous said...

something had to happend with the actor, because kutner was so not depressed! He showed no signs at all, and i know that that i how suicide works, but this is a show not reality, and they should have said something. I loved kutner, they should had killed taub. I still will watch house because it is the best show ever, but if they dont put house and cuddy soon i will go on strike.

Mr.Joe said...

Yeahman, it was getting interesting...then this....
Makes me wonder how much more Kal was asking to continue the show $$$.....hmmm....or did he just do something dumb....I dont know.
very wweird to kill someone of like that...

Anonymous said...

Here is the thing. The cast was changed to switch things up and it did that well. Now they will start working the original cast back in slowly but surely. Why do you think the beginning of the show always shows, house, cameron, and chase? They never changed it to show the new cast. If the new cast were going to be permanent than they would have changed it. I am not surprised they killed Kutner but think of it like this. Kal Penn has alot of projects going on. I am sure he knew his character was only going to be around for so long. He has other movies and stuff too make. YOU cant expect an actor like that to stay on fox forever. AS for 13...whoever keeps saying to get rid of her must be a woman. Only a jealous chic would want a woman with that kind of beauty out of the picture :-)

ALL YOUR COMMENTS PRETTY MUCH SUCK. I WATCH HOUSE FOR HOUSE. DR. HOUSE IS THE MOST INTERESTING CHARACTER IN THE SHOW. HES SEXY, INTERESTING, DEVIOUS, PUZZLING, SCHEEMFUL, AND SURPRISINGLY JUST WHEN YOU THINK YOUVE SEEN IT ALL WITH HIM, HE TURNS ANOTHER DIRECTION. AND DID I MENTION SEXY.
HE MAY BE DREAMING, BUT SUICIDE IS UNFAIR. YOU CANT CHOOSE WHO STAYS IN ANY SITUATION IN LIFE OR WHO GOES. BUT WE CAN CHOOSE OUR ETERNITY. HEAVEN OR HELL.
BUT WHILE IM HERE IM STILL DR. HOUSE'S BIGGEST FAN. SO FORGET ALL YOU WHO THINK OTHERWISE. IM ONTO THE NEXT EPISODE.

I've been reading a lot of posts about this wondering why no one has thought of a previous episode when the guy tried to commit suicide to get rid of the pain. Kutner and Taub had several conversations about suicide. "Painless" I'm trying to remember exactly what Kutner had to say about suicide...

This sucks! Kutner was House's worst nightmare. He was the best! R.I.P. Kutner!!!!

Something's not right with the Obituary-page... actually, two things sort of don't fit:

1. The obituary mentions that he had a girlfriend named Nicole Brewster. We never knew of her. Was she the girl in the picture with his dad (her complexion doesn't fit the name too well, though)? Why did they write 'girlfriend', not 'former girlfriend'? It would be very strange would this have been his current girlfriend - House wouldn't have missed him having a love-life - he'd have figured it out and found ways to annoy him because of it.
But then, as Wilson mentioned, House is afraid that it was suicide, because it would mean he missed something - that he is 'losing his gift' of not missing any clues, so it could be another factor in that. But that doesn't seem likely, I think. So what's with 'Nicole Brewster'?

2. The obituary says he got a science award as a (high school(!!!)) student for an experiment involving dark matter.
There's no such thing as experiments with dark matter - as it is a postulate to explain astronomical phenomena, not something found on earth. Furthermore, it doesn't interact with regular matter except through gravity - so what experiments would you do? Was this a blatant faux-pas on FOX's side? Certainly possible. I don't see it having any great meaning - because I can see nothing for which this would be a clue. So I guess FOX were just extremely sloppy...

I'm sad they killed him off - I did like him as a character, I mean his superstition and BS-arguments in the episode with the priest made him a contrast to House, but I thought they were stupid and annoying... there would have been much better ways of building contrast to House's character.

Bad Twist -- Kutner was the only good character..House has lost all its good writers looks like..the storyline is getting sucky ! Once a good series, House has gone down the drain

Anonymous said...

Kutner's dead. House is right. That is the crapy thing about life.

Unknown said...

Kutner from the beginning of his appearance on 'House' gave us the immediate excitement that the future dialogue exchanges and rebellious antics were going to be a total blast.......I am searching for what the writers were planning for him because they fell short with him throughout and killing him altogether was not kind to your fans. I need to get to LA and start overseeing things again.

Anonymous said...

Pretty strange that Kutner doesn't get a 'death scene' ala Terminator: Sarah Connor. When your contract is up, you get to do the hold-your-breath bit. Forget the dream sequence - the show is too smart to do that twice. So you have Option 1: Trouble In Paradise - he screwed up\had 'creative' differences with the show. Better still, (especially for a 'smart' show full of mindjobs), you have Option 2: Did you see Kutner? No. You saw feet. While it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for 13 to go melodramatic without House actually being present, it COULD be that pissing on House's chair wasn't enough payback for Kutner\House's flunkies. Mayhaps a minjob on House is in the works......

I say good riddance Kutner was a boring character on the show. So is the rest of the new crew. They have no personality. There's next to none chemistry among the members. Go back and watch the first few seasons with the original crew. Now THAT was entertaining. I always thought they should've kept Amber... oh well.

Anonymous said...

It's always the overseas contractors that first get the lay off notice.

Anonymous said...

First off I am upset that they killed off Kutner but a lot of people are saying he was the show's best character and honestly that isnt true you have House, Cuddy, Wilson, Chase, and Cameron who all beat him though admittedly its tough for thouse last two what with them hardly being there any more.
Also I do not think that they will go a lot further into explaining this nor do I think this will all be a dream stemming from a blurry camera at the end of last week.

I do however think that the grief will get to either Cuddy or House (most likely House in my mind) and one will seek refuge in the other and they will finally get together at the end of the season.

ITS JUST A DREAM, LAST EPISODE HOUSE'S VISION WENT BLURY WHEN IT ENDED. sorry for caps, just had to get the message out.

Anonymous said...

Something else doesn't make sense. The obit says he was from Fremont, CA and went to UC Berkeley undergrad and Tel Aviv medical school. If that were true wouldn't his parents be living in CA? Also, didn't Cuddy say he streaked during a Penn State v Dartmouth game? I figured he would have some association with one of those institutions.

I don't know why any one is shocked that Kutner was the one to die in Series 5.

Simple reason for why I say this:

Character Building.

Both Taub and 13 had there characters heavily built up through out the series whilst Kutner never had any background or real life crises happening to him (where as Taub with his job/wife and 13 with her huntingtons).

The most character building I seen for Kutner was when we all learned that he bullied kids in school many moons ago...and appolagised to one kid (now an adult) on christmas.

Seen it coming a long time ago!

I do agree that his wit and funny moments had alot of charm, which I was hoping to of seen more of through out the series to compensate for a weak background story (which would of made his death a little more heart wrenching...but to me it was way too hollow and false, especially not seeing the dead Kutner and just a pair of feet...what a let down).

I was sort of expecting House to sort of imagine what could of happened Murder wise to Kutner whilst he was stood in his flat - in a similar camera fashion to the last episode that panned around and the scenery changed (episode: locked in) - NOW THAT would of been awsome! It would of given Kutner's Death some dam justice!

Wilson standing right next to him, sort of enabling him for ideas and causes as this scene happened could have worked really well...and would of been a proper tribute to Sherlock Holmes ^_~ (then afterwards calling House an idiot in proper Wilson fashion)

I love house! but i feel way too much energy has gone into the cast rather than the medicine this season round, however, after season 4 they did raise the bar and expectations were risen (possibly a little too much).

I just read all the comments on this episode of House, and cannot believe anyone would even take your comments as anything more than illiterate, obnoxious people with no reality in thier own lives. When I say illiterate I mean most you should go back and read your posts, you cannot spell and definately do not know anything about grammer. Get over it, it is just a drama series on TV, didn't your parents teach you that fiction is just that, not real. Besides, at least he only killed himself, he could have strapped a bomb around his waist and went to work and blew up the whole hospital, he did everyone a favor (except he didn't take 13 with him) and I am not gay or a jelouse woman, I am just observant and know what good TV is. In this case Dr. House is the show all by himself. Anyone who thinks Kutner was more interesting than Dr. House obviously is incapable of appreciating the talent it takes to play a genius as Dr. House does and make it interesting as well as entertaining. Could it be that Dr. House's dialog goes over your head? The credits actually go to the excellent writers of this drama series, they have done a great job so far, so there is no reason think they all suddenly lost their ability to write excellent eppisodes, they made another great desision as they always have and it can only get better from here.

If this was nothing more than a dream then the next episode is really going to suck. As you all should have seen from the preview of the next episode Dr. Wilson gets into Dr. House's face about not showing feelings about his death. To be quite honest, I thoght that Dr. Taub was the one who killed Dr. Kuter just due to the lack of feeling he was having about the death of a co worker. Of course that would be wrong due to his total breakdown at the end of the show. I'll agree that Dr. Kutner was an excellent character. However, I do believe that he was becoming a liability to the team as a whole. (and the cat episode was a little unneccessary as far as a main case goes) Hopefully this will mean another large turn of events in the main cast, and maybe it will be someone completely unexpected. (like the older non med school graduate wink wink). Hopefully with due time and progress, things will end up much better than intially expected.

wow. All these comments, and not one even remotely seems to care about the fact that the website posting a faux 'obituary' and talkin about his death as if it were real, is EXTREMELY tacky, let alone childish and offensive to real sufferers of depression, and families of those that have committed suicide.

I guess it takes a non-fan to see through this self-absorbed drama discussion blog (over a TV show no less) whose posters seem alarmingly disconnected to reality!
Wow people...and I STILL can't get over Darth Vader, being Lukes FATHER!!!!

You criticized your fellow bloggers by saying none of them could spell or knew anything about grammar, and that they should all go back and re-read their posts. Well, maybe YOU should do the same. Here are some of the words YOU misspelled:

grammer (for grammar)
thier (for their)
definately (for definitely)
jelouse (for jealous)
eppisodes (for episodes)
desision (for decision)

(And don't try to pass these off as typos.)

Grammar mistakes:

"went" should have been "gone"
"blew" should have been "blown"

As for punctuation mistakes, there were too many to count.

"Let he who is without spelling and grammar mistakes cast the first stone."

Anonymous said...

How true is that? Jelous? Definately? Grammer? Get a life. I love this show, but was very sad to see that Kutner's character is not coming back. Why no Kal in this episode? Inquiring minds.

I was impressed with the change after the solid last episode (Locked In). It is very unfortunate that Kutner is gone but we learn a lot from the remaining characters due to it.

Great episode. Changes happen people, that's how a show stays on the air. So many people complain about the show being formulaic and this is exactly the opposite. I applaud FOX for taking this step, it is bold.

It's funny how we get involved in our TV shows...I ACTUALLY CRIED during this episode. Maybe because my best friend committed suicide 2 years ago....Keep telling myself IT'S A STUPID TV CHARACTER...

The shock factor was there for me, we'll just see how far this goes. I noticed the fuzzy image of House in the elevator also. I also feel this is going to be major with House in coming to terms with it ....If it wasn't a dream.

Love House!! Fantastic show. And if someone has to "die" (on the show) to keep the ratings going, bring it. Just keep the show going. I actually think it was a good choice. There are two many dimensions with all the characters I think it's good to simplify. Not just for dedicated viewers like myself but for those who may not be fans yet. However, putting a facebook site in memorial to "Dr. Kutner" -- way over done and intellectually insulting. Thanks.

Anonymous said...

I too was sorry to see Kutner's character "killed" off. He was very quirky! Was Kal's contract up, maybe he was asking for more money or maybe being part of a "group of doctors" wasn't fulfilling enough and he just moved on to something else. I hope that we'll find out what really happened later on down the road.

Hello, 12:59 here. Thank you for your comments about my posting. I will not try to pass the words off as typos, because I did that on purpose to see if people actually read the comments before they post their own. Great job! My point was that it's a great show and Dr. House is the lead character and always will be. The writers are great and I'm sure will continue to be. It is just a show, I would stop trying to figure out why they chose to do what they did and just enjoy the show. For those who will not watch the show anymore just because of a change is crazy. I will continue to watch because it is the best show on TV now and they don't make medical mistakes, actually they are pretty much right on, I usally diagnose the case before they do. Might want to go back to nursing school, lol...

I need someone positive and funny around...

Kunter was the only one that had some light less sardonic comeback lines.

We gotta like some people on the show.

Interesting plot twist. The fake website is tacky, but Fox has always been a tacky company. Besides, it has everyone talking- myself included I guess, so this ratings ploy worked didn't it? Also, Kal is now likely to recieve more attention on future projects as a result of this, since everyone will be eager to see him again after he was killed off in such a dramatic fasion. It's all about the ratings!

It sucks to kill of anyone on the show, but it kind of seemed like the show subtly set it up. Everyone in the show has problems, except Kutner. During this season, everyone had problems, but Kutner was the one who was normal on show with no personal problems. Moreover, he solved the case before House in the last episode. I was expecting something bad to happen to him, but I didn't expect this.

I hope Penn comes back; he is doing such good work for India's educational system. I'm betting on a dream. Hope the series will include House getting in to a band as part of his psycho- therapy!

In any event, I want to thank the writers and actors for touching on suicide and other mental disorders; i.e. House's. NAMI is a wonderful organization and I hope those of you who need help, especially in understanding these disorders, feel free to contact this group in your area.

You don't have to suffer in silence anymore- no matter what educational level one attains.

Kal Penn left to be in politics, then the writers came up with this storyline for character development and shock value. That was a great episode very sad but when a TV show stirs that kind of emotion it deserves praise.

"All these comments, and ...talkin about his death as if it were real, is EXTREMELY tacky, let alone childish and offensive to real sufferers of depression, and families of those that have committed suicide."

I feel that Kutner's suicide makes people very uncomfortable because it makes them face the reality that depression and suicide are real diseases. Many people in the United States think that people get depressed and commit suicide because they are either too full of themselves to realize how good are their lives or too trivial to "snap out of it." However, depression is a serious MEDICAL illness with known causes. If last night's episode prompted one person to call the hotline for help or to realize that one person he or she knows may be suffering from more than a series of bad days, then it is worth all the cost of the anger of stupid people who "hate" the writers for tackling an uncomfortable topic. After all, are not anger and bargaining (AKA the people who want taub or 13 to die instead or people who believe it to be a dream) part of the stages of grief?

The writers of "House MD" have never avoided uncomfortable topics but embrace them for the sake of making people aware of them. As someone who knows people whose lives have been touched by the suicide of friends, I applaud the efforts of the "House MD" writers to bring awareness to the issue and their tasteful and honest portrayal of it.

RIP all those who have been taken from this earth too soon because help for their depression came too late or not at all.

THIS IS WHY PENN LEFT HOUSE

http://blog.zap2it.com/korbitv/2009/04/kal-penn-leaves-house-for-obama-no-seriously.html

Anonymous said...

I think people are missing the point...
Every season of house balances around a theme of sorts.
Season 1 balanced around getting to know who House was, who his team was, etc etc.
Season 2 focused on his relationship with Stacy, and how it made him feel the way it did AFTER she left.
Season 3 focused on his team starting to grow up, and branch off without him as he dealt with his problems in addiction (though as we know he never DID "fix" it), and that he was losing his best friend because of it.
Season 4 dealt with House having to go through the process of having a new team, as well as learning to be a little self sacrificing at the end of the season.
And finally Season 5 has had it's ups and downs, following through as House learns to get his best friend back, deal with his abusive father's death, and falling in love again (If you don't know who then take a guess. ;]). He also tries many ways to experience happiness, by even taking drugs that nearly kill him.

As each season progresses, you see a softer House.
Compare season 1 with 5, watch an episode from season 1 and then go to season 5 and you'll see the difference.
He's use to losing people because they walk away from him, he isn't use to them offing themselves off like that, and it's obviously effected him on a deep level, helping his character grow, the MAIN character grow, as well as the side characters such as Foreman and Taub.

Yes, there will be a grievance period, but eventually I think we'll start to see it.

I see there r comments made by dr. House...is that really dr. House or someone playing games?... If it's really him; that's awesome! I think the memorial page made everyone confused....house is a great show and as long as cuddy, Wilson and dr.house r on the show, it'll b awesome regardless!! House is the shiznit!!

I was extremely shocked, upset, and confused when I realized that Kutner (Kal Penn) would no longer be on House. I mean, suicide? Really? It threw me for a loop, because my fiance looks like Kal Penn... so it's like someone telling you your boyfriend killed himself. He was my favorite character, because he was the only one who was House-like. He put House in his place... we needed a character like that on the show who wasn't a female. He needed a peer. Now it's only going to get more confusing. Kal, why did you have to go?!

Kal Penn is leaving the show "House" to work in the White House (or at least, in the Old Executive Office building next door). The actor, best known for his role in "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle," tells Entertainment Weekly :

I understand it was your decision to leave House. True? KAL PENN: Yes. I was incredibly honored a couple of months ago to get the opportunity to go work in the White House. I got to know the President and some of the staff during the campaign and had expressed interest in working there, so I'm going to be the associate director in the White House office of public liaison. They do outreach with the American public and with different organizations. They're basically the front door of the White House. They take out all of the red tape that falls between the general public and the White House. It's similar to what I was doing on the campaign.

Will you actually be working in the White House?
PENN: This particular office is in the executive building. The White House has two buildings: the actual White House and an old Navy building called the Old Executive Office.

Are you there as long as Obama's in office?
PENN: A lot of that stuff is up in the air. This is a relatively recent development.

Safe to say you're taking a huge pay cut?
PENN: Oh, yeah. There's not a lot of financial reward in these jobs. But, obviously, the opportunity to serve in a capacity like this is an incredible honor.

How long has this been in the works?
PENN: I've been thinking about [moving into politics] for a while. I love what I do as an actor. I couldn't love it more. But probably from the time I was a kid, I really enjoyed that balance between the arts and public service. I went to a performing arts high school, but I still took a bunch of those dorky political science classes. It's probably because of the value system my grandparents instilled in me. They marched with Gandhi in the Indian independence movement, and that was always in the back of my head. So the past couple of years I thought about it a little more. And in '06 I started this international studies program at Stanford, where they actually let you do most of the course work online. So it was something I could do while I was acting. And I thought this might be the right time to go off and do something else.

Penn's character on "House" committed suicide. Read the rest of the interview here.

Penn urged two undeclared college superdelegates to support Obama in an open letter published on The Huffington Post in May. He was a floor whip at the Democratic National Convention, and starred in a pro-Obama online ad:

'In early 2009, Penn was offered the position of Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Liaison in the Obama administration, which he accepted, necessitating that his House character be "killed off"'
KUTNER WAS THE MOST LIKABLE MALE CHARACTER ON THE SHOW.

I am really gonna miss Kutner. I am a recent House fan. I got turned on to it right before Christmas so I am not bored with the series and I am enjoyin ghte story lines. I am upset about Kutner he did bring a liveliness to the show that offset House's miserable existence. Let's face it he is miserable. He snoops into other people's business and annoys those who are around him, but it fits. I would not have him any other way. So having a character like Kutner brought some sun to the otherwise dreary world of house and his employees. I will miss him so much. I hope for the best.

Anonymous said...

For all you people out there.. Theres a reason why the show is called House and not House and his Doctors. This puts an interesting twist on Houses character growth, something happened that he just can't explain, that not even he has the answers too. Although I do agree that Kutner was an amazing character, he is also the one that had no reason what so ever to commit suicide. Taub has major money problems, as we see in the last episode. 13 has an incurable disease and is going to die eventually and Foreman, his girlfriend is going to die someday no matter what he does. So any of them dying would not be a mystery to House at all. House through the whole series has been an ignorant prick, who spends his life analyzing logically the why or why not... Now finally he has something that he can't explain, and he's so completely baffeled that its bothering him. I think we're going to see a change in House in the future episodes. Thats my take on the episode, I can't wait to see what happens next.

Wikipedia says Penn may want to pursue politics and that's why he was removed.

Loosing Kutner was devastating, he was a good character, so friggin funny, and smart, out of all the characters lately I've enjoyed Kal Penn the most, HOUSE needs a relationship with someone...whether it be Cuddy or some girl they bring on the show, its just all getting too repeatitive at this point. But it def. wasn't the writters fault for killing Kutner off, he's def. working at the White House..its still sad tho...and by the way, Ive read all the blogs on here, and some of you people are so annoying...not most, but omg 12:59AM guy, GET A FUCKING LIFE or else ur gonna be the one to commit suicide from being such a friggin loser, Jesus, who cares if people dont spell correctly all the time! Seriously, its not a grammar contest, we're all typing fast, not thinking we're gonna be judged on our grammar by a dork who has nothing else better to do! And chick that said, and I'll quote "It threw me for a loop, because my fiance looks like Kal Penn... so it's like someone telling you your boyfriend killed himself"...one of the dumbest things I've ever heard someone say..or type..thats all, peace out

Anonymous said...

I can't figure out why they keep killing off the most interesting characters just at the time when they might be developed into deeper, more human characters.

Amber's killed off, even though she's the most intelligent, strong and beautiful character with the potential to be a good foil to House. I know the actress went off to Mad Men (which jumped the shark already), but was it necessary for them to bring her back as Wilson's girlfriend (too briefly for him to be sent spinning out of control after her death, by the way), only to kill her off half a dozen episodes later?

Now Kutner, the most interesting of the new team is killed off by suicide. Not in a climbing accident, not in a car wreck, not trying to save the life of a young child in a dangerous situation, all of which would be more in character with, well, the character.

Instead, he dies alone at his own hand, for no reason. Yes, the actor now works for President Obama, but is the suicide supposed to be some sort of symbolism? Because it doesn't make any sense any other way.

Kutner was the best character on the show. As Dr. House becomes less interesting and more monotonously dull, Kutner was becoming more fully human and interesting.

Sad day for House, MD. I guess we're stuck with the more boring "romance" between 13 and Foreman. Sadly, the writers seem to think that interracial romance with a bi woman is cutting edge.

Anonymous said...

Taub's character is so boring, I wish they would have cut him from the show instead of Kutner.

Can you imagine what it's going to be like now, just a bunch of people sitting at a table talking about sick people and medical tests.

For me, Kutner WAS the show for the past two seasons. He was the only actor and the only character that had the least bit of skill and charisma.

Now we're stuck with vanilla characters on a artificially-flavored vanilla show.

Yuck!

I agree 100% with "Dr. House"'s comment above. My very first instinct was "WTF?!" Afterward, when I saw the NAMI information, I 'got' it. Sad, frustrating and quite poetic. Suicide makes as much sense. Sad that it was Kutner but it would've been 'predictable' should it have been Taub or Thirteen, if you will.

As always, the House M.D. writing staff is top notch. Thanks guys!!

Well, personally I am sad to see Kutner go. I thought he added a certain amount of light-heartedness as a character and acted as a foil to House and ... well, actually all of the others personae. Taub, 13, Cameron, Chase, Foreman and House himself all are 'broken' in some way and this comes across in their characters. Kutner, while being adopted and a past bully however always seemed to allow a lighter mood into his personality and I think it is that which I will miss the most.
The method of his departure I think was handled very well. If we had seen an 'eyes open and hole-in-head shot' I think that that is how we would have remembered him and not as the character we have grown to love (or hate!) and this would have lessened the emotional impact which the writers, I believe, wanted us to feel, especially for a subject that is so emotionally fraught as suicide. By not showing us the gruesome details it has allowed us to focus on the feelings of confusion and loss which a suicide can instill in ourselves. Well played.

RIP Kutner. Good luck Kal Penn in your new career.

PS. Terrible as it is to suggest this, but unless Taub can shake it up a bit I hope he's next. Then again, maybe it's just time to clean house (pun only half intended).

TCC - Boboche - You guys are funny. Didn't you notice the color throughout the whole episode? looks like a bad dream. House was blurring out during the last episode. SO if this is a real suicide and they wrote off the character, they've left a lot of opened possibilities on the creative and (post)production side of things... stay tuned, we're ending the season 5, so there's meant to be a LITTLE disturbing issues... house is no 24, but it has its own twists especially near season ends!

I’ll be honest, I was a little puzzled by both the artistry of the show and the manner in which Dr. Kutner “killed himself”. At first, I thought to myself, “you’re not going to trick me, this is a dream”. Their use of “muted colors” was consistent with that. Then, I thought, “hey, it’s April!” Having counseled teenagers, I know that March and April are months in which suicide rates are highest among teens, often times without warning. Great!! Get that information out there! Then just like that, the show ended with more questions than answers!

Here’s my problem with the Dr. Kutner suicide scenario:
1. It was TOTALLY out of character with his character. Sometimes, suicides are like that, but not with someone like Kutner who prided himself in being responsible. He would have at least left a note. This is a guy who, years after the fact, went out of his way to apologize to someone he demeaned in high school. High School!!
2. He left a mess for someone to clean up. People who blow their brains out utimately tell the world, “I want you to clean up my mess”. Dr. Kutner’s character, while somewhat invisible to others, didn’t seem the type to want anyone to clean up his mess. He would have chosen a different means.
3. He was a star on the rise. He was the guy with credible answers. He was witty and composed. He was becoming the “go to” guy and was actually becoming the moral compass of the show, notwithstanding his peeing on House’s chair.

That said, it is April, and one of the things I learned about suicide is that sometimes the people that commit suicide do so in the spring because everything that is going on in the world around them (the cycle of rebirth and renewal) is inconsistent with what’s actually going on inside that person’s head. So, at least the timing is consistent.

On a different note, one of the things that the show was successful in doing was raising the question, “how well do you really know the person sitting right next to you day in and day out?” It might even be your husband, wife, or child. Imagine that!

Len McKee said...

I thought it was a good episode even if the motivation for killing off the character was contractual or Kal Penn leaving to pursue other avenues, unlike most tv shows there was little foreshadowing, with the exception of the Kutner Taub exchanges earlier in the season about Taub's failed suicide attempt. From a PSA it makes the point some people just kill themselves and never care to offer any explanation. The show is about HOUSE and really the only necessary characters on the show are HOUSE and Wilson.

Congratulations to the HOUSE, MD show for addressing mental illness in a meaningful way. The impact of Kutner's death by suicide will likely be a continuing ingredient on the character development and illustration of the human condition in the show. While I agree with many others that Penn's character was the most likable and "normal" of the bunch, this story line shows that health, including mental health, is fluid and that humans are not necessarily ill one day and healthy the next. Perhaps Dr. House will continue his education into the working of the mind and will not be so glib as to label folks as idiots because of unreasonable and unexplained behavior. I can only hope that we all do more to understand mental illness and support organizations such as NAMI in their work with families and and individuals affected by mental illness.

Although whats funny is in the post you claimed it was intentional in yet again there is bad grammar and several misspellings. Stop trying to sound smart, you didnt do that intentionally you are just trying to save face after being a jackass towards other people for doing the same exact thing you did in your own post. grow up and be adult enough to admit your mistakes. Nobody is perfect, including me, and including you. We all make mistakes and you nor anyone else has the right to judge someone on their mistakes. Kutner was a great guy, however he has moved on to bigger and better things. Something thats a bit more benefitial to mankind than creating a show.

Kudos to you penn, i hope you do as good in your new job as you did as an actor.

I think that house actually killed kutner without knowing because the last episode he appeared in front of house as a hiluconation (sorry I'm not a great speller)and he seemed to be sadish slash serious and before that he just went through 3days in which he thought he was off of vicadin he thought that cuddies lipstick was in his hand but It was the pills so there is a great chance he killed him without knowing

well if you idiots did a little bit more research you would learn that they had to kill him off because Kal Penn is going to work in the white house it was his decision not thiers

Ok... really everyone CALM DOWN! Yea he was a great character, but he was killed off because of probably 2 things 1) he either might have quite or been fired 2) he could have because it would create something sad, almost all episodes end a happy ending, this was different, so STOP COMPLAINING!! You guys ruin the show with all the complaining!

Here's my theory of Kutner's motivation for suicide.

The season of House MD started with a large group of candidates which grew smaller and smaller. In each episode few doctors were fired. In the second last episode before Kutner killed himself House was told he could only hire two doctors, a fact that he publicized widely by asking various colleagues who should he fire and who he should hire. He even asked Cameron in front of Taub.

In the episode before Kutner died, Taub was "fired" and was trying throughout the episode to prove himself worthy of the job, but fell short. In the final scene he stole the credit for Kutner's diagnosis and saved his job.

At that point Kutner then knew for certain that Taub would not last long as there were still three candidates, Taub, Kutner and Hadley (aka Thirteen), but only two spots.

The episode in which Kutner killed himself the patient (Meatloaf) was presented the option of killing himself so his wife could get his Liver and she could live. After Meatloaf was cured and told he would live a long life Meatloaf still insisted he would walk out the door and commit suicide as a sacrifice so his wife could live.

This is dead obvious now, the only other suicide mentioned during the episode Kutner dies is motivated by sacrifice. It shows that Kutner committed suicide so that Taub could get the job. Taub had a wife to take care of. Hadley and Foreman were a couple and if Hadley got fired it could feasibly strain the relationship. Kutner's choice of self sacrifice is deluded and wrong but it was motivated by putting others' needs and lives above his own unattached life.

Taub avoided any talk of Kutner after the death. He tried to bury himself in work but in the final scene of that episode he broke down in tears. He knows the gift he had been given, and was guilt ridden.

the actor decided to join Barak Obama in the white house. that's why they had to remove him from the show immidiatly. and they chose to kill his character cause it's the only way to remove him without filming an episode with him.

If you look up the actor Kal penn you will understand that they did not choose to get rid of him. He had to be removed from the show because he took a job with the white house. They loved him on the show and he liked it himself but he made a career change for the time being

Kutner died because Kal Penn left acting to pursue a more political life. He was campaigning for the president and such. It is bad that Kutner died, but I'm glad Kal is doing something for himself.

I also hate the way that they killed Cutner, he had, over the last seasons become my favourite character, a close second to 'The Doctor', but I have never known anything on TV be able to move me so much. We all want 'reality TV', so I guess that the writers gave us that, how real can you get when you cry for a fictional person? I miss Cutner, I loved his character, I am hoping that they freeze his brain, and in season 20 they grow him again, lol, I doubt it, but who knows. Thank you to the writers for giving him to us, for making us love him, but damn, why did u have to kill him!! Great song by the way, Lose you -Pete Yorn, could not have done the funeral any better, really moving. I feel better now, I have got some of the sadness out, lol, God, its only TV!!!!!!

For acting questions please consult a real director. Only just watched this wee shocker re Kutner so I realise my reaction is all merely 'histoire ancienne.' Am I the only British blogger out there!? With huge respect, some of you sound like the bonkers (and a tad doped up, it must be said) visitor on "Talk Radio" - remember him? Here's how it all works: actor wants to leave show, writers kill off his character, actor leaves show. Just think, I've got to keep this Kutner business from my husband who hasn't caught up with it yet!? This is because of life, jobs and things. (Hello Hugh, come back'n see us sometime).

no worry guys, it has been said a long while ago, that kal just quit the show, because he was given the opportunity to work with the then new elected president obama and that he wants to pause his acting career in order to be able working for the president in the white house.
that's why the planned third installment of harold&kumar was 'delayed'.
and please don't say that 13 should've died instead, cause i can't stand in series or movies when a beautiful woman dies, i don't know why, it just makes me sad, even if it's just a movie :)

next up house should leave the show to work with McCain =)) He's too funny for the series to keep him :))
